Contaminated mid-day meal: Rs 4 lakh for 126 students

Putting absolute liability on the Delhi government to ensure the mid-day meal provided in its schools is cooked properly, the Delhi High Court on Thursday directed it to pay over Rs 4 lakh as compensation to 126 students who had fallen ill after consuming the food in a government school.

Supreme Court notice to Haryana over Mirchpur Dalits

New Delhi: Taking a serious view of 150 Dalit families from Mirchpur village in Haryana's Hisar district being forced to leave the village after two of them were killed allegedly by the dominant Jat community, the Supreme Court on Monday issued a stern notice to the Haryana Government for its response to a petition highlighting their plight.

Scarp POSCO, says fact-finding team

A fact finding team travelled to Jagatsinghpur district of Orissa to look into the human rights violations in the wake of May 15 police attack on the activists of POSCO Pratirodh Sangram Samiti (PPSS) and villagers affected by the proposed POSCO project. The team headed by retired judge of the Bombay High Court and chairman, HRLN board of trustees, Justice H Suresh comprised veteran social activist Chitranjan Singh, professor Kalpana Kannabiran, veteran public health doctor Dr Punyabrata Gun, senior journalist Bolan Gangopadhyay and HRLN executive director Harsh Dobhal who also doubles as a human rights activist and journalist.

HRLN’s guided effort rescues 72 child labour

April 29, 2010: With the intervention of the Human Rights Law Network, 72 child labourers were rescued from a leather bag factory in central Delhi. The HRLN team was part of the Central District Task Force which carried out the rescue operation in the Nabi Karim area, along with representatives of Bachpan Bachao Andolan (BBA), Childline,  Labour department and Delhi Police. The joint action led to the release of 72 minor bonded labourers who were brought to Delhi from the villages of Bihar by touts on false pretexts and were employed to make purses and bags. The children were forced to work, sleep, and eat in the same room and were given a meagre wage of Rs. 30 to Rs 1200 a week for a 16 hours day shift.
