Mumbai: A 17 year old boy being reprimanded at a children’s observation home in Dongri died on April 14th at JJ Hospital, where he was brought after he complained about having difficulty in breathing. According to the mother of the child, his condition was a result of brutal torture meted out to him by some officers from the Railway Protection Force who had arrested him early morning of 4th April 2018 alleging mobile phone theft. “When I met him he told me that before bringing him to the observation home, they took him to Kurla Railway Police Station, tied him to a chair, and beat him mercilessly to extract a confession”, said the aggrieved mother. According to her, the boy mentioned about his torture when he was produced before the City Jurisdiction Juvenile Justice Board but no action was ordered against the perpetrators. The boy belonged to a poor family living in Sion and his father works as a ragpicker. India celebrates Ambedkar Jayanti on April 14th every year.
