SLIC files petition seeking effective enforcement of Maharashtra Welfare Scheme for Persons with Disabilities

|

This petition was filed seeking proper implementation of the Maharashtra Welfare Scheme for Persons with Disabilities, in particular the provision mandating all local bodies to reserve 3% of their funds for welfare schemes for persons with disabilities.
In light of the passing of the new Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, a new scheme will have to be framed. The Court has directed the state government to take necessary steps as early as possible to frame the new scheme as per section 37 of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act. The scheme was directed to be framed at the earliest.  It was also directed that the Principal Secretary/Secretary, Urban Development Department, Rural Development Department and Social Justice Department oversee the  implementation  of the Act  and  implementation of  the Scheme framed earlier till the new scheme is framed under the new Act.

The Status Report in respect of the effective implementation of the scheme and compliance of the directions issued by the Court has been directed to be placed before this Court on the next date.
