Compensation for illegal detention and assault in custody

Padmanabahan Vs State of Kerala Background Padmanabahan is a member of Kuruma tribe residing at Pulpally in Wayanad. He was taken into custody by the forest officials alleging he had killed an elephant in the Chethalayam forest range limit. A confession was obtained from him using third degree methods. In spite of complaints about the physical assault no action was taken against the erring officials. Criminal cases against Padmanabhan is pending in Magistrate court. SLIC filed a petition before State Human Rights Commission praying for enquiry into the incident and compensation for the illegal detention and assault. Current Status The case was taken up on May 13, 2017 and is posted for evidence.
