Consumer court order company to pay man who was denied insurance payment after wife’s death

The Wayanad District Consumer Redressal Forum has ordered United India Insurance company to pay Rs 5 lakhs to a man who was denied insurance cover after the death of his wife. M R Kelu and his wife, Kalyani, belonged to the Kurichiya tribe of Kerala. His wife, who was a member of a group insurance policy “Ksheera Karshaka Suraksha Padhathi,” under the scheme of insurance for accidental injuries or death. After an accident, she sustained spinal injuries and was admitted to the Medical College in Calicut. Subsequently, she passed away but her insurance claim for her treatment for Rs 5 lakhs was rejected by the insurance company. SLIC’s Wayanad unit took up the case and filed a case before the district consumer redressal forum. The Forum ordered United India Insurance company to pay Rs 5 lakhs to MR Kelu.
