Delhi High Court grants relief to 297 Press Trust of India employees fired overnight

Hon'ble Delhi High Court on 27.11.2018 granted interim relief to 297 employees who had been retrenched overnight by the Press Trust of India vide Notice dated 29.9.2018. These employees span across the length and breadth of the country. Writ petitions challenging the said action of PTI was filed by the worker's unions seeking continuance of work on the same terms, as existed prior to the impugned act of retrenchment. Suspension of the operation of the said impugned notice during the pendency of the petition was also sought by the workmen, as an interim relief. The arguments were heard in the matter on 4.10,2018, 8.10.2018 and 9.10.2018. Mr. Colin Gonsalves Senior Advocate addressed arguments on behalf of the Petitioners. After hearing detailed arguments in the matter, Justice Hari Shankar was pleased to issue notice to the Respondents giving them 4 weeks time to file Counter Affidavit in the matter. With respect to stay, Hon'ble Court passed a detailed order on 27.11.2018 observing that a prima facie case had been made out on behalf of the Petitioners. High Court observed that irreparable loss would be caused to the Petitioners if interim relief of injuncting the Respondents on acting upon the notice is not granted to them. In addition, Court observed that prima facie case was made out for grant of injunction. This Interim Order gives relief to 297 employees of PTI across country and allows them to resume their duties subject to final disposal of the case.
