Amarnath Pandey vs. State of Chhattisgarh The petition was filed in the High Court of Chhattisgarh for grant of remission and release of life convicts who have undergone jail sentence of more than 20 years, yet their cases have not been considered by the Prison Review Board constituted under the Chhattisgarh Prisons Rules, 1968. As per the list prepared by the Chhattisgarh State Legal Services Authority, there were about 500 life convicts detained in different prisons in Chhattisgarh beyond their period of sentence. In view of the directions of the High Court, about 411 life convicts have been released till date under section 432 Cr.PC read with Rule 358 of the Chhattisgarh Prisons Rules, 1968. The Court has further directed that the Prison Review Board shall meet twice a year for considering the cases of such life convicts, and the Presiding Judge should decide the cases within a period of three months.
