SLIC Advocates in Srinagar file a Public Interest Litigation on Infant Mortality

|

SLIC advocate Syed Faisal Qadri filed the PIL in response to the shocking spike in infant mortalities at G B Pant hospital in Srinagar. Using data from media reports, the petitioners, Dr. Rouf Mohi-ud-Din Malik and Tanveer Hussain Khan, show that over 350 newborns have died in at the hospital in the past several months and that 35 babies have died in the last two weeks alone. The PIL demonstrates that negligence, substandard infrastructure, and inadequate implementation of maternal care schemes in Srinagar violate women and children's rights right to life and health enshrined in Article 21 of India's Constitution. In response, the PIL requests the Honorable High Court Bench to initiate an official inquiry into the deaths, to order the state to implement government schemes/standards, and to provide compensation for the victims. The Srinagar team filed the petition on 23 May and the Court will take up the matter in the upcoming weeks.
