Socio-Legal Information Centre in collaboration with Tata Institute for Social Sciences (TISS), Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative (CHRI), International Bridges of Justice India (IBJINDIA) and Multiple Action Research Group (MARG) held the 3^rd National Consultation on Prisoners’ Rights, Legal Aid and Prison Reform on the 19^th and 20^th of March 2016 to achieve the following objectives:

• Build and strengthen the legal aid system in India through fostering partnerships with State legal aid service authorities, lawyers, NGOs, and civil society groups.
• Ensure an effective monitoring mechanism to enhance transparency and accountability inside the prisons and ensure that adequate safeguards are put in place to protect the vulnerable inmates.
• Build partnerships and a network of prison reform activists that will bring in lawyers, activists, NGOs working with prisoners, academicians, journalists, and other concerned members of the civil society towards achieving the above stated objectives.

Over 100 participants, including lawyers, activists and academicians attended the 2 day National Consultation which was held in TISS, Mumbai. At the end of the consultation a National Forum on prisons was formed and an action plan formulated to accelerate the process of reform in prisons across India.
