Breaking: BEST union workers secure demands for pay hike, end 9 day strike

In a victory for the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport Undertaking (BEST) workers’ union, the union, through Court order, secured the implementation of an interim pay-hike for about 15,000 employees by way of a ’10-step increment’ plan. Subsequently, workers’ union informed the Bombay High Court that it will call off the strike with immediate effect. The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport Undertaking (BEST) workers, its management and other parties concerned will now go for mediation to resolve their dispute. Over 32,000 BEST workers have been on strike since January 8 over demands that include pay hike, revision of pay scale of junior level employees, and merger of BEST’s budget with that of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The terms agreed upon include the appointment of a retired high court judge who will mediate terms between the workers’ union and BEST management. PFA, the order by the Court.
